CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A judge’s decision to overturn the vote of 7 million Californians that defined marriage as one man and one woman within their state constitution threatens to void West Virginia’s Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Activist judges, says the president and general counsel of the Family Policy Council of West Virginia (FPCWV), have created a potentially explosive situation for candidate for the U.S. Senate.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A federal judge voided the Federal Defense of Marriage Act (“DOMA”) last Thursday in a decision that threatens to undo West Virginia’s 2001 DOMA. According to the Family Policy Council of West Virginia (FPCWV), Thursday’s decision is the latest attempt to circumvent the democratic process and further weaken West Virginia’s commitment to marriage.

CHARLESTON, W.Va., - The City of New Albany, Indiana, was recently told by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit that it acted improperly in regulating an adult bookstore in its City in a decision that may make it more difficult to regulate harmful sex businesses across the nation. Due to the negative effects of such businesses on children and families, the Family Policy Council of West Virginia (FPCWV) joined with other organizations across the nation to participate as amici (friend-of-the-court) at the U.S. Supreme Court to encourage the Court to hear New Albany’s appeal and reverse the Seventh Circuit.

MORGANTOWN, W.V. — An Alliance Defense Fund allied attorney secured an agreed-upon court order Friday that extends care for a 40-year-old woman on dialysis at Ruby Memorial Hospital after the hospital originally said it would end treatment on March 27 against the wishes of the woman’s family.

CHARLESTON, W.Va., – On Sunday, Congressmen Al Mollohan (D-1) and Nick Rahall (D-3) joined other supposedly pro-life congressmen to announce that their vote for healthcare reform had been secured by a final solution offered by our nation’s most pro-abortion president ever. The Family Policy Council of West Virginia’s president and general counsel, Jeremiah G. Dys, Esq., issued the following statement:

More than 125 people braved the snow and cold today to express their desire to vote on the definition of marriage by delivering more than 4,600 petitions to lawmakers at the rally for marriage—exceeding the goal of 2,500 set just one week ago.

The West Virginia Family Policy will hold a press conference during its “Let Us Vote” marriage rally featuring Maggie Gallagher, President of the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), Randy Wilson, National Field Director for Family Research Council (FRC) and Jeremy Dys, President and General Counsel of the Family Policy Council of West Virginia. CHARLESTON, W.Va., – West Virginia Free, the abortion industry’s state activist and lobbying organization, at the Capitol on Monday called for legislators to increase funding for contraceptive coverage in a “common-sense” effort to combat teen pregnancy. This institution that denies the unborn a chance to live, cites a study from Marshall University’s Center for Business and Economic Research to defend their incorrect conclusion that increases in teen pregnancy can only be combated by putting more contraceptives in the hands our of teenagers. The study fails to consider – or even mention – abstinence education. “WV Free is notorious for working to restrict information women need to make life and death decisions,” said Jeremy Dys, president and general counsel of the Family Policy Council of West Virginia (FPCWV).

CHARLESTON, W.Va., – As a critical First Amendment case makes its way to the Supreme Court of the United States, the Family Policy Council of West Virginia (FPCWV) today praised the addition of Attorney General Darrell McGraw’s signature to an important amicus curiae (friend-of-the-court) brief filed Thursday. McGraw joins attorneys general from around the country in arguing against the recent decision by the University of California to dismiss a student ministry from its Hastings College of Law because the ministry required its members to affirm its core religious viewpoints.

CHARLESTON, W.V. — After a year of studying whether or not the Legislature should allow West Virginians to vote on the definition of marriage, members of the Joint Committee on the Judiciary have failed to advance a reason against letting the people of West Virginia vote on the definition of marriage. CHARLESTON, W.V. — A joint committee of the West Virginia Legislature will hear testimony Tuesday on the need for an amendment to the West Virginia Constitution defining marriage as one man and one woman. CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Family Policy Council of West Virginia called on the Kanawha County Board of Education Tuesday to withdraw a proposed addition of “sexual orientation” to its “cultural diversity” policies. CHARLESTON, W.Va. – This Sunday, March 1, hundreds of West Virginia churches across the state will participate in “Stand4Marriage Sunday.” The participating churches will address the importance of marriage and reaffirm their commitment to defending and protecting marriage from redefinition by same-sex “marriage” advocates. “West Virginians need to be aware of the looming threat of same-sex ‘marriage’ in their state,” says Jeremy Dys, president and general counsel of the Family Policy Council of West Virginia. “Stand4Marriage Sunday is an opportunity for pastors to articulate the definition of marriage and make congregants aware that unless they take a stand now, their voices may soon be silenced when it comes to protecting marriage as the union between one man and one woman.” Participating churches will spend time during their morning service to pray for strong marriages in their community, pray for their leaders, and to make the community aware of the importance of defending marriage as the union of one man and one woman by asking the West Virginia Legislature to allow a vote on a marriage protection amendment.
